Playing Poker

Welcome to Poker-page.org, your guide to playing poker online. Starting out playing poker you really won't know what to expect. I didn't when i started playing, that's for sure. I know its a bit of a cliche, but poker really is what you make it. In my line of work, i meet a lot of poker players, some new to the game and many experienced. I personally have educated myself on playing winning poker and now regularly enjoy good success online having recently won a handful of major tournaments and regularly cash out in the juiciest cash games and top tournaments. To give you a brief introduction, my name is Richard Zikakis and i have been playing poker and writing columns for a number of years. I also write for a few other poker sites, including Top15Poker.com and love sharing my poker experiences as well as hearing the experiences of others. The balance i have in my every day life is brought about by doing what i love in my job and having the skills to make money playing poker as a sideline and without having to risk any real sums of money.

You might ask why everyone suddenly fell in love with poker, after all it has been around for hundreds of years? Well it has only recently become socially acceptable and it wasn't until the poker boom that your average Joe Blog started dabbling in what is now certainly the worlds most popular card game. One of the main factors behind the rise of the game was the introduction of the hole card camera (the camera that shows the TV audience what cards players are holding) which was introduced and this really was the pivotal turning point of the game. Its inventor was Mr Henry Orenstein who is known in the poker world for his single World Series of Poker Bracelet in Seven Card Stud (1996). He had applied for his patent (Number 5,451,054) – you can check it out at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website in 1994 and it was granted in mid September 1995. The first time it came into use was in the British show Late Night Poker in 1997.

Suddenly people could see what players were holding and there was a real interest in watching. Before this time the game really wasn't a spectator sport, after all it was just watching players at the table without knowing what anyone was holding. Could you imagine watching a big game on the television and not knowing who had what? Now compare that thought with watching the same game but knowing exactly what each player was holding. Doesn't quite hold the same emotional excitement in ther first instance.

In turning the game of poker into a spectator sport, the popularity rose very quickly and this fueled what is now a booming online market. What is really exciting about online poker right now is that as there are so many people playing online, poker rooms are making an fortune and as such they have formidable marketing budgets. So how does this impact you? Well, whether you play online already or are looking to spread your wings and play across multiple sites, there are generous promotions that you can take advantage of. We have some great poker bonuses and on-line offers across some of the most exciting poker rooms around (big and small). I really do hope you enjoy the visit and equally hope that you find what you came for. Check out our guide to the top online poker rooms.

Playing Poker - Starting Out

Remember everyone started out at some stage so you are never too late to get involved. If you are looking to play on practice tables, finding an suitable online room is probably your best bet and starting point. All rooms listed on Poker-page.org have practice tables available so there is no obligation to stake a penny of your own money. Consider that firstly if you go to a real card room you will likely have to wager money to play and being a novice, you might not be doing yourself any favors. The second point is that you will stand out as a novice, which is not something that you need. When learning the game, it is easier to play online as you can make mistakes and learn from them without being a cat amongst the dogs. If a good player knows you are inexperienced there is a lot they can do to get hold of your chips;) Of course there are some of us out there that would prefer to learn the hard way, however when the hard way is losing a ton of your hard earned dosh, i would question the logic. Keep in mind that it costs nothing to join a poker room and you are not obligated to deposit any money (unless you want to). All poker rooms listed on this site have practice tables where you can play poker for free without making a deposit or registering any card details etc. To get started, simply click on the link and you will be taken to the room of your choice. Most bonuses on offer will automatically be assigned to your account simply by using the links available on this site. Please note that where a bonus code is detailed you need to use this when you sign up to be able to claim your bonus. Where no bonus is listed, the bonus is automatic through our links.

On the flip site, online isn't the only way to get some action (in poker terms!). If you really are interested in learning the game and prefer live games, find your local Casino and locate some small tournaments or low stakes cash games that you can get involved in. Playing live really is great experience for you but remember to keep the stakes low when you are starting out. Remember that as we get more experienced, we get better at playing so take it easy when you start out and to quote a popular phrase, a fool and his money are easily parted!

Playing Online Poker

Playing online poker is your alternative to live games. It is scary how quickly you can be at a poker table playing poker nowadays but to many this is the real appeal. Once you have booted up your PC, a couple of minutes and you are good to go. Play in the kitchedm, bathroom, bedroom - your connection knows no boundaries. Personally i think that is the best thing since sliced bread, but that's just me. It wasn't so long ago that i remember there being a limited number of online rooms and even the big poker rooms only had a few players logged in during peak hours. Play Online PokerNowadays, some of the bigger poker rooms have over 200,000 players logged in and seated during peak hours - this is a lot of revenue for poker rooms and a lot of loose games! Poker rooms like any other good business are never happy and are continually striving to bring in new players as well as reward their existing players. To do this many have have put in place some highly attractive bonuses to get you involved. So how do the bonuses work? I won't lie to you, nothing in life is free. The bonuses are generous and they really are free money offers, the catch being that the rooms hope that you will play and take a liking to their site making it your home. A bonus is a bonus, but you will have to earn it. What they will do is release the bonuses as you play for real money. What it really comes down to in my view is that if you are going to play online anyway, you may as well get paid to play poker. If you play poker for a few hours in the evening and get $20 added to your account, you have only gained.

Here is my selection of the best poker rooms, all equipped with free tables to practice on should you wish to get some practice in. I have played and continue to play in all these rooms as they have good numbers of loose games, have good traffic, offer some great tournaments and have good and appealing software.

Playing Poker Tournaments

When it comes to poker some like playing cash games, others like to play free games and some like to play in poker tournaments. Personally i am a fan of cash games and tournaments but tournaments have a special appeal. Firstly tournament play is a great way to learn the game without risking your entire bankroll (although you really should be taking no more than 10% of your bankroll to the table). Should you chose to play a tournament (online or live), you can choose your buy in, meaning you decide whether to play a $1 tournament or a $200 buy-in tournament. Obviously as the buy in increases, so do the prize pools.

Where the appeal really lies in my view is that you can buy in for a modest amount and you have the chance to win thousands in return. Check out our poker tournaments and see the best rooms for tournament play.
